One Thing at a Time is a reflection on the small things - life’s pieces, threads and building blocks. Written between 2020 and 2023, the suite embodies the shifts in perspective and priority that follow major life changes: the need to transmute life's complexity back to the simple and the sensory. Back to one thing at a time. The piece represents a shift in compositional focus towards clarity, and a more organic language.

Each movement has a textural, thematic and emotional focus named for a tactile object or action: Step, Brick, Breath, Grain and Threads. These are the foundations of being, movement, life, and the ties that connect us. They are where we begin.

Performed by (and written for) celebrated cellist Blair Harris, exploring these themes through the rich physical and sonic body of the cello was a natural and obvious choice for this work that holds dichotomies of beauty and darkness, simplicity and multitudes.
