Alice Humphries is an Australian based composer and arranger working across the jazz and contemporary classical worlds.  Her music has been described as “bursting with life and fun, as well as great great beauty” and “deeply thought provoking…offering both moments of incredible intensity and sublime serenity.” She is interested in how natural phenomena can be explored through music.

Alice's music has been performed across Australia and internationally by artists including the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, Syzygy Ensemble and The Letter String Quartet. Her music has been recorded and broadcast for ABC classic fm and she released a debut album with Ecila in late 2012 to critical acclaim. In 2013, Alice was a finalist in the APRA AMCOS Art Music Awards for Jazz Work of the Year for her piece The World Rushes On from the Ecila recording. She was a finalist in the 2011 APRA Professional Development Awards and the National Big Band Composition Competition and in 2010, was the Composer-in-Residence for the WA Youth Jazz Orchestra (WAYJO). Alice has recently begun working in film and cross-disciplinary projects including collaborating with Johannes Luebbers to create the soundtrack for the feature documentary 'It's Not Just Me' about 4 F2M Transgender Men.

Alice also works extensively as an arranger and orchestrater. She has worked with artists including Eddie Perfect, Josh Pyke, Kate Miller-Heidke, Missy Higgins, the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra and the Sydney Symphony, and creates string and brass arrangements for contemporary popular artists in both studio and live settings.

Ecila records debut album!

So the gig at the Ellington went really well and we had a great audience out on a Tuesday night which was wonderful! The recording was a fantastic experience and we got through all the music in 2 days which was pretty amazing. Next is the editing and mixing process..fun fun!

We’re hoping to release the album before the end of the year so stay tuned!

Here are a few photos from the gig, more to be found in the new gallery!

Upcoming Gig and Recording!

So I’ve spent months writing the music, booking the studio and organising rehearsal dates. (This is a nightmare by the way… it’s really hard to get 10 very busy and amazing musicians in a room at the same time…!)

But it’s done! (well almost..)

It’s going to be an intensive 2 week project of rehearsal, a performance at the Ellington and then heading into the recording studio. Three wonderful musician friends are flying over for Melbourne to play the music as well the other wonderful Perth based people. I’ve included some vocal arrangements with different takes on some jazz standards as well as some old folk songs. I am really looking forward to hearing the amazing Allira Wilson sing them! The gig will also involve some music from trumpet and vibraphone duo Cal2. They’ll be playing some music that I’ve written for them as well as some Stockhausen pieces!

The gig is at 8pm, Tuesday July 3rd at The Ellington Jazz Club, 191-193 Beaufort Street Northbridge.  Would love to see you there!
